As mentioned previously February is a HUGE month for the CDCC. Here are some of the details:

On February 11th Dinosaur Monster is playing at the LFA Hall in Macomb with Seven Birds One Stone as well as Teto and The Bounce House. Special light effects providing a spacey atmosphere will be provided by Polygon Productions. Here is the best part: Dinosaur Monster will be releasing the first three tracks from their next album in a limited run that night! These tunes will only be available to own on the limited edition physical copy until the full album release.

On week from then the wait is finally over. DandyLyon Whine will be releasing their second full length album, Coelacanth. That's right, the album two and a half years in the making is finally done and ready to be released. Two versions of the album will be released, the regular one that is just the audio disc, and a deluxe that comes with a DVD of videos for every tune on the album. The CD release will take place at the New Dodge Lounge in Hamtramck. Opening the show will be a solo set by Keith Bedore of Sound And Fury / The Ashleys fame, and Detroit blues heroes Looking Up At Down.

So, this is a bit late, but we at CDCC wanted to thank you all for coming out to catch the release of Oliver Thompson's "whatever" album. It was another rousing success for the label and it really shows that we are on the right path with the right people. If you were not able to catch the show check out the embedded player at the bottom of the page and then head over to our bandcamp page for a pay what you will download (that includes free by the way).

Coming up on November 11th the label is back at the Berkley Front for NIGEL TUFNEL DAY! This day goes to 11 (11-11-11)! Come celebrate with us as some of Detroit's biggest and best rock and roll creations pay homage to the children that grew too fast Spinal Tap. We'll be sharing gear and trading off playing tunes all night long. We will also be releasing a Spinal Tap tribute album for free that night. The first 50 people will receive a physical copy for free and free downloads will be given to all latecomers. The cost is $5 at the door, JFn'K will warm up the crowd at 10 and we'll open up the TAP at 11!

Another year has passed and the state of the CDCC is strong! Over the last 12 months we have grown incredibly. We've released Dinosaur Monster's debut album and a single from the upcoming DandyLyon Whine record. Our bands have played countless shows and the label has held many showcases. Communist Day Care Center took part in the first Axis Mundi Festival which featured 15 bands and 10 visual artists. Needless to say it's been a busy and fulfilling year.

We have a big year ahead of us as well. Very soon we will be reissuing Oliver Thompson's 'whatever,' and album that was written and recorded by the master songwriter in only one week.

The label will be celebrating Nigel Tufnel Day, 11/11/11, by releasing a tribute to spinal tap featuring some of Detroit's best bands. This will culminate in a free download and a featured show at The Berkley Front.

DandyLyon Whine will release their long awaited second album "Coelacanth" on February 18th, 2012. The band has been busy playing and writing and is currently working on recording the album. For a preview of some of the material here is video of Jeremy Otto of DandyLyon Whine playing a solo show at The Berkley Front on June 30th, 2011

Dinosaur Monster Release This Saturday

This Saturday marks a large event for the Communist Day Care Center. It is the day it becomes real.

Sometime circa 1995 I borrowed a handful of metal CDs from a friend of mine. There was one I liked in particular more than the rest, but I didn't know what disc it was, as for some reason this one had no booklet or backing in it's case. The only clue I had was that the CD itself had a lyric on it, "You cannot sedate all the things you hate." Shortly after the last song ended came the voice of a woman yelling "Go home to your mother! Doesn't she ever watch you? Tell her this isn't some Communist Day Care Center. Tell your mother I hate her! Tell your mother I HATE YOU!!!" I soon found out that the CD in question was Marilyn Manson's Portrait Of An American Family, and many years later I found out that the woman yelling was a sample from the John Waters movie Desperate Living.

From that point on every artistic or creative thing I did came with the moniker CDCC ProDuctions. At one point I wanted to be a filmmaker. Those videos I hope to someday get digitized and uploaded like Radiator, The Most Artistic Movie Ever, and Alien Incident In Rochester all are CDCC ProDuctions. Those qbasic and megazuex video games I programmed were all CDCC ProDuctions as well.

Fast forward a bunch of years to the summer of 2009. I've been through the ringer of playing in the local scene and had been burnt out for a while. In the interim I went back to school for music education. After a few years of that intense schedule I was burning out on that as well. I decided that it was time to record the music that I had written over the years. As I neared the completion of the album I realized that I needed a mode to put it out. I had ins to a local label and asked about it, but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of interest. Who could blame them. I didn't play out often and honestly I am a much stronger performer now than I used to be. If I were them I would have been wary as well. I cam to find out later that if I had done a bit more asking and pushing I probably could have been on that label, but I'm the kind of guy that the second he hits any kind of resistance says 'Fuck you! I'll do it myself!', and thus Communist Day Care Center was reborn. This time as a record label.

To start I put out The Day After Labor Day, which is the DandyLyon Whine (my) release. I also "reissued" the back catalog of a band I used to be in, Shell, in order to give the label some ballast when it came to releases. In the summer of 2010 I put out an EP by a side project I am in, JFnK, titled Back And To The Left.

So far, I have been a primary musician for every project on Communist Day Care Center. That changes this Saturday with Dinosaur Monster's eponymous release. I recorded and mixed the album and besides being the first release that doesn't feature me as a primary player, it is the most involved recording project I have ever taken part in. I am very proud of it.

For more than the last fifteen years, what the term Communist Day Care Center meant to me, and most people around me, was a vanity title put on to projects to make them seem more meaningful, to give them false weight. It was something you were supposed to do because big productions had it. Fake it till you make it, right?

Saturday we make it.

This April is a big month for the Communist Day Care Center. For starters, EINHEUSER'S SELF TITLED DEBUT IS FINISHED! I have heard it and its brutality will melt your face off. Here at the day care we are ironing out details for a CD release show. None the less they are playing these upcoming dates:

We are currently in the process of mixing Dinosaur Monster's debut as well. It is slotted for a May release and the band has many shows coming up this summer! Axis Mundi Night also hearkens the triumphant return of DandyLyon Whine to the stage. After playing most of their gigs with a rotating cast of bass players they have finally found a permanent member and welcomed Elliot Kleinfelder to the band. They'll be opening up Axis Mundi night and premiering many songs from the upcoming album Coelacanth, which is slotted to be released sometime in late summer or fall. Here at CDCC we've had many requests for new DandyLyon Whine music and thus we've decided to release a limited edition single from the album. "If You Loved Me" will come in CD format backed with a demo for one of the new songs and the hidden track from the last album. (Most people that downloaded the album missed that one!)

Here's an update from the Communist Day Care Center. EINHEUSER IS DONE! Well, almost. The album is being mastered as I type. I should have a copy in my hands early next week. We still need to discuss exactly how and when the release will happen, but the album that was supposed to come out last June is done, a mere seven months later.

Dinosaur Monster is back in the studio and making good progress. Expect that one in a few months.

Sick of waiting for the mustash album? Me too, but for my own sanity we need to put it off for a while. in the long run this will make a much better and more enjoyable album. It will be worth the wait. In the meantime, check out this video of them from Small's.

As we approach the new year I figured like so many other organizations that it is time to let all of you to know about how we're doing and what to expect in the new year.

We are a growing label! In 2010 the label has added three bands to it's roster, Mustash, JFn'K, and Dinosaur Monster! JFn'K's debut EP Back And To The Left is out and doing well! The CDCC catalog has been updated and is available to download here! Dinosaur Monster and Mustash are both in the studio working towards spring releases. DandyLyon Whine are in the writing process and is looking to put out a release in mid to late 2011. If we get lucky there might even get that Einhueser release we've all been looking forward to.

Don't forget that CDCC is part of the Axis Mundi Collective, a community of local Detroit musicians and artists. The collective is now looking into putting together another compilation CD. If you missed it, check out the first one here. There is also talk of an Axis Mundi festival in either may or June. I'll keep you all informed.

It should be noted that I am looking for some help with the label. I've been keeping myself pretty busy running things on the back end, in the studio, recording, mixing, mastering, looking for talent, booking, promoting, playing, and all that stuff. It should also be noted that in my other life, the one away from the label, things are about to get really busy. All of this leads me to need an advisor on hip. I need someone who's 'in the scene' to give me the lowdown, let me know where I need to book, where I should have music for sale, and what words to use instead of 'hip' and 'lowdown.' The fact is that even when I have the time to be looking I'm still the last to get on the bandwagon. So if you're in the audience and you like what we do, well help us out. Let me know what's up and we'll take this town by storm. (ugh. I'm so dreadfully uncool)

Alright, so I'll leave you with some stats. One of those behind the scenes things I got done this year was to put all the stuff in the current catalog up on youtube to view. They all went up within a week of each other except for 'Zombie Apocalypse,' and 'Cutlass,' which are the only two with a proper video. Poor "Bloodcrush," and "Architect."

Dinosaur Monster IN STUDIO!

Dinosaur Monster has entered the Communist Day Care Center, and let me tell you that they are sounding good!! Last night Eric and Ken laid down drum and bass tracks for more than half of the album. All the crazy rehearsal and preparation they have been doing has paid off because they are tight!
Here's some of the tech. specs. for you gear heads out there:

The kit's a Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute 22, 10, 14 w/ an old Ludwig Supraphonic snare, and Zildjian K's for cymbals. On the kick we used the ol' standby AKG D112, as well as a pair of AKG C519's on the toms. For the snare we used an AKG d190E, which is a microphone I like to use for a lot of different applications, but sounds great on snare. It was a microphone designed for use with public announcement systems and the like, and it has a really unique flat response. It is certainly my favorite microphone in my stable. On the hats we had a Shure SM81. For the overheads we had a pair of C100's that sound just great.

We ran the bass direct with this setup, which gave it a big, fat, tight sound.

All of this ran through a single Tascam US1641 Interface sampling at 96000 Hz into a two year old MacBook Pro running REAPER.

We'll be working on tracking the rest of the drum and bass next Saturday and guitars and vox after that.

One year after The Day After Labor Day

It's been one year since the release of The Day After Labor Day. I suppose in a technical way we're still two days away from the date, but here we are a year later on the day after labor day. A lot has happened in that year. I recorded the album myself over the preceding summer. I played all the parts, did the mixing, mastering, and created the art and layout on my own. It was a labor of love, but it was also a labor of spite. I wanted to prove to everyone that I had what it takes to put out an album on my own. I was sick of getting the reviews of "It's alright, but it's not 'X'." I still don't know if the album is great, that is something that is left up to the listener, but at the end of the day, I did it and I have something to show for it. Let it be known that if ever I should die, god forbid, that someone contacts Vinyly records in England and has my ashes pressed into an LP of The Day After Labor Day.

A few weeks before the album was to come out I was contacted to play the first Varnerstock. This gig would take place a few weeks after the release. I put together an all star band out of the best musicians I knew and began to rehearse. It probably wasn't the best gig I've ever played in my life, but it sure felt like it. Playing my music with a band is one of the best feelings I've ever had. When I'm playing with them I feel like I am part of the audience, listening to the music they're playing. As a band we've come a long way. We've a string of successful gigs behind us, and we're starting to get a following. By the way, Varnerstock II is this weekend at Varner Recital Hall on the Oakland University Campus.

The release of The Day After Labor Day also signaled the rebirth of The Communist Day Care Center. Now functioning mostly as a record label, CDCC is the label I've put on different projects since high school, be it music, video production, or qbasic programming. The title was taken from a line of dialogue in the John Waters movie "Desperate Living." I of course heard it first as a sample from the end of Marilyn Manson's Portrait Of An American Family. There is a band out of San Diego that also uses the name. You should check them out. They're good. As a label we've picked up a few acts and put out a few CD's. The long awaited full length album from Einheuser, titled Einheuser, should be out soon. Should be. The debut release from JFn'K is the first release we've put out with 100% in house production. From the recording to mixing and mastering. From the duplication to the artistic layout printing, we've done everything. It is also the first release that stands to make it's money back. We're not quite there yet, but we're close. CDCC is also part of a larger collective of local labels, the Axis Mundi Collective. This network really provides a lot of support and we are really happy to be a part of such a great organization. Long live Axis Mundi.

So, where does this leave us? Well, it is the day after labor day. It is a change in season, it is the day we come off of vacation and go back to work. It is the day that we start to get things done. What's next? Well, as a label we're going to grow. We are going to find and put out artists work so that it can be heard. What are we going to do as a band? We're going to put out another album. I am currently in the songwriting process. The approach to this one is going to be different, and I'll be collaborating with my band mates in the recording of this one. There will be no short cuts, not that there were last time, but there will be no solid deadlines to work against until it is known how long it will take to be right. Expect good things from us. Expect good things from the label.

In parting, go and do good things. You can do it. If you can't do it on your own, find people to help you. It is possible, and, after all, it is the day after labor day. It's time to get back to work.

Greetings Comrades!,

Much is happening at the Communist Day Care Center. For starters check out the new CDCC Gift Shop, a pseudo organized storefront for all your CDCC trinkets and knick-knacks. Also, check out the Axis Mundi store, where you can get not only CDCC merch, but also merch from the entire Axis Mundi Collective.

Coming up at the end of the month is the 1st Annual Communist Day Care Center Potluck Jamboree!!! Come party with the label, meet the bands, eat some great food, drink some great beer, and have a great time! Music from DandyLyon Whine, JFn'K, Mustash, and Einhueser. Pulled Pork and Beer will be provided, please bring a dish to pass. Make sure to bring enough for everybody, (and I mean everybody!)
This should be a great time, make sure to invite your friends.

Greetings Comrades!

There is much to celebrate at the Communist Day Care Center these days.

First and foremost we are happy to announce the addition of Detroit metal gods Einheuser to the CDCC Family. Check out their epic progressive music at their Myspace page: myspace.com/Einheuserband. A formal website is in the works, and expect a full length album from these guys before the end of the summer. We'll keep you informed.

Secondly, JFnK has agreed to reunite and will put out an EP before the end of the summer. This will be the first recording from this summertime classic. Tracking started this week and this is already shaping up to be one of the best straight up ROCK recordings of the decade.

Make sure to come out to the Crofoot Vernors room on July 30th to catch a rockin' set from DandyLyon Whine. While you're at it come out there to see Jeremy rock out the drums with Oliver Thompson and the Places this Friday.

And last, but not least, August 28th is the tennative date for the first annual Communist Day Care Center Pot Luck get together. There will be beer, food, and of course plenty of music. All are invited, bring a dish to pass, but bring enough for everybody, and I do mean everybody.

Communist Day Care Center is officially part of the Axis Mundi Collective, a collection of local artists for the advancement of said artists. While consisting mostly of musical artists at the moment, the idea is for anyone of any creative premonition and predisposition is welcome and of equal importance to the forward movement of the group. One might even say it's communist. As of yet we comprise of Communist Day Care Center, Forget Records, Algae Records, Sonic Lullaby Records, and No Money Records. This is really exciting news and an exciting time for CDCC. More news to come soon!
